Herbert Maycock (1848-1896) The following information was gleaned from military service records and both substantiates and adds to the information contained in the family history. Herbert Maycock died on January 30, 1896 in Amesbury, Mass. at the age of 47 years, 6 months and 4 days. Calculating backwards, that puts his date of birth as June 26, 1848. The cause of death is indicated as "phthisis" which according to the dictionary was otherwise known as "consumption" but by us as tuberculosis. On his death certificate, his birthplace is listed as Philadelphia but elsewhere in his military records it is cited as Germantown, PA. Herbert enlisted in the Union army on January 4, 1864 which would make him 15 ½ years at the time. He was a private in Company A, First Regiment of the Massachusetts Volunteer Cavalry. He was discharged at Clouds Mills, Virginia on June 26, 1865. There is no record of his having a disability at the time of discharge. He married the former Ellen Flanigan in Amesbury in November 1878. Ellen was 22 at the time and was the daughter of John and Julia (Burke) Flanigan also of Amesbury. Ellens birthplace is listed as Galway, Ireland. Herberts parents are listed as James and Ann Herbert. Herbert was a blacksmith by occupation. Herbert applied for a disability pension in April 1895. He was suffering from a number of maladies. He was 5 feet, 10 inches, dark complexion, black hair, hazel eyes. Herberts widow applied for a widows pension in May 1896. On the application, there is no record that she and Herbert had children. Ellen re-married in June 1898 to a man named Patrick Lee. She received her last monthly widows pension, in the amount of $8 in June 1898. Patrick Lee died in Amesbury in March 1925 at the age of 70. Ellen died on January 3, 1937 as Ellen H. Lee. Herbert and Ellen are both buried in St. Josephs Cemetery, Amesbury.
